Hailed as one of the torchbearers of the Black independent film movement, Haile Gerima's films have made a tremendous impact on movie-goers worldwide. Like in the tradition of Oscar Micheaux, Gerima's seventh film Sankofa, was successfully released nationally by renting commercial theaters. Gerima formally studied acting at the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago. He received a B.A. in 1972 and a M.F.A. degree in film at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1976.

Gerima is originally from Gondar, Ethiopia. A tenured professor of film at Howard University, he began teaching film in 1975. He continues to create and distribute African and African American films through his company, Mypheduh Films, Inc. Participation in a host of film festivals has earned him international acclaim and deep respect from film aficionados worldwide. Gerima's selected honors include: The 43 International Berlin Film Festival (in competition), Initiator of the Paul Robeson Award at the first FESPACO Pan African Film Festival in Burkina Faso; The 1984 Tribute to Haile Gerima at the Festival De La Rochelle in France, and the Critics Choice Award at Cannes ('83).
